Day 1

Welcome to Portugal

Piodão, Linhares da Beira and Trancoso

The day will start early so that we can take advantage of all the road ahead.

The first village to visit on this itinerary is Piódão, set in the Serra do Açor, on the abrupt escarpment shaped into a tightly knit structure with a sinuous layout, well adapted to the roughness of the surrounding area. Lunch will be in this picturesque and unique village.

Next up is the 12th century medieval village of Linhares da Beira, which has a unique architectural and artistic diversity, the result of the legacy of several eras. In 1169, it received its first charter, granted by King Afonso Henriques.

Located on the top of a plateau, from where you can see a vast territory between the Serra da Estrela and the Douro Valley, Trancoso developed around its castle, founded in the 8th-11th centuries. After visiting Trancoso, your driver will help you check in at Marialva.

Day exploring Marialva and Almeida

In the morning, after breakfast, set off in the direction of Almeida, which is said to have originated from the migration of the inhabitants of a Lusitanian hillfort, located to the north of the place of Enxido da Sarça, occupied in 61 BC by the Romans, and later by barbarian peoples.

Given its location on a plateau, the Arabs called it Al-Mêda (the Table), Talmeyda or Almeydan, and built a small castle (8th-9th century). Faced with the need to modernize the obsolete medieval structures, after the Restoration it set about building a new war machine that could adapt to the new firearms and allow it to seal the border.

The Praça Forte is hexagonal in plan, made up of six bastions, to which the same number of revelins correspond.

Back in Marialva, you'll have the opportunity to explore the streets lined with time-resistant buildings that lead to the citadel surrounded by walls whose ruins make it easy to lose track of time.

Populated by the Aravos, a Lusitanian people, it was later conquered by the Romans, followed by the Arabs, until the final victory of Ferdinand the Great in 1063, in his emblematic conquest of the Beiras.

Enjoy the sunset from the highest point in the village and experience something unique that will surely be remembered for many years to come as one of the most beautiful views ever.

Sortelha & Belmonte

Sortelha and Belmonte

In the morning, after breakfast, we continue our journey through Portugal's historic villages.

Today is the day to visit Sortelha and Belmonte. Sortelha is one of Portugal's most beautiful and oldest villages, having kept its urban and architectural physiognomy unchanged since the Renaissance until today.

The tour through the streets and alleys of the settlement, enclosed by a defensive ring and guarded by a 13th century castle overlooking it, will take you back to the past centuries.

The history of Belmonte is usually associated with the history of the Cabrais and the Jews. It was the birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the navigator who commanded the second fleet to India in 1500, during which Brazil was officially discovered.

Castelo Novo and Monsanto

We continue our medieval journey through Portugal's historic villages. After breakfast at the hotel, we head for Castelo Novo, in the heart of the Serra da Gardunha, in a natural amphitheater landscape, in shades of green and gray and enveloped in an aura of mysticism.

Here, you can feel something fascinating, involving and harmonizing. Everything inspires, everything captivates, from the sound of the water flowing from the fountains to the perpetual granite that erects the village and carves the houses, sidewalks and squares. A unique architectural heritage.

Castelo Novo first belonged to the extensive territories donated by the Portuguese monarchs to the Order of the Knights Templar, later the Order of Christ, in order to promote and secure possession of the domains conquered from the Muslims in the 13th century. Have lunch in a local restaurant and try the local cuisine.

Perched on a hill that imposes itself on the eye from most horizons, the Monsanto Historical Village of Portugal has a unique charm, helped by the two titles it was awarded in the 20th century - Aldeia Mais Portuguesa de Portugal in 1938 and Aldeia Histórica in 1995.

A tourist icon in the region, Monsanto is a unique experience for visitors. It was granted charters by King Afonso Henriques, King Sancho I, King Sancho II and King Manuel. The oldest part is at the highest point, where the Templars built a fence with a keep.

Monsanto to Lisbon

Monsanto to Lisbon with a stop in Tomar

Today the adventure through Portugal's historic villages comes to an end, and after breakfast you set off in the direction of Lisbon.

But along the way you'll also have the opportunity to visit Tomar. With over 30,000 years of human settlement in this territory, Tomar was founded by D. Gualdim Pais in 1160. It was the seat of the Orders of the Temple and of Christ, and Prince Henry the Navigator was one of those responsible for its growth.

Human settlement was due to the excellent climate, abundant water, easy river communication and excellent soils.

Get to know the historic center of the city of Tomar and the Convent of Christ, where you'll find the most symbolic of the five windows in the Lower Choir of the Convent's church (the symbolism of the five Manueline windows is even greater if you think of the five empires/5th Empire and Pentecost).

The greatest exponent of Manueline art, it has become an icon of Portuguese heritage, full of allusions to the Discoveries and the History of Portugal.

Due to its profusion of characteristic Manueline decorative elements and intense symbolism, it is a benchmark of Portuguese art.

The façade on which it is built is a huge piece of art that complements its meaning and emphasizes other allusions, including the idea that the trays of the Festa dos Tabuleiros were inspired by the botaréus that flank the space.
